Who’s JJ’s Real Dad in Outer Banks?

Warning: Spoilers for Outer Banks ahead. It’s a mystery after mystery. Outer Banks Season 4 Part 1 ended on such a major cliffhanger which might change the course for what lies ahead of the Pogues.

The season starts out with the Pogues settling down after finding gold at El Dorado with their shop and safe haven, dubbed “Poguelandia 2.0″ but finding themselves in major financial trouble after JJ (Rudy Pankow) spends too much money. With new enemies emerging, Wes Genrette (David Jensen), who encouraged the Pogues to find Blackbeard’s treasure, wrote one last letter before his death that was addressed to “Master JJ Maybank.” When JJ finds the letter, Wes writes to JJ that he should ask his dad about “Albatross.”

When JJ does confront his dad Luke Maybank (Gary Weeks) about what “Albatross” is, he reveals that it’s the boat that Larissa Genrette died on. He then says another bombshell, “I’m not your blood father JJ,” and reveals that the mom he shared with him was actually a girlfriend.

So, who is JJ’s Real Dad?

JJ’s real father is Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane). Through Larissa, Wes is also JJ’s grandfather. It’s unknown whether Chandler knows the truth that JJ is his son. It was revealed in season 2 that is was rumored that Larissa’s baby died alongside with her, but the baby miraculously survived and landed in the care of Luke Maybank.

While the revelation is new to JJ, it might also come as a surprise that he’s a Kook now. Though he was raised by an abusive father, JJ always took pride in being a Pogue alongside John B. (Chase Stokes), Pope (Jonathan Daviss), Kiara (Madison Bailey), Sarah (Madelyn Cline), and Cleo (Carlacia Grant). But now that dynamic is going to be strange for future episodes. “That was the most extreme thing we could think of: That JJ’s actually a Kook,” Outer Banks co-creator Shannon Burke told Netflix’s Tudum. Co-creator Jonas Pate also concurs, ““Well, you’re always trying to torture your characters, right? What would torture JJ the most? The revelation that he’s a Kook.”

As for what dangers lie ahead, JJ might have the Grenette curse. It led to Larissa’s death, and later Wes’ death as well when he saw the ghost of Elizabeth. It’s not revealed what killed him, but maybe all will be revealed in the upcoming episodes.
