The star of the show was a RiRi’s slate gray bustier made of floral mesh, paired with matching lace tights. She decided to top it all off with an enormous shaggy coat featuring tiers of brown and burgundy fur, exuding vintage Hollywood glam. Also, let’s not forget those black heeled sandals with blinged-out criss-crossing straps—because why not add a little extra sparkle?
The lingerie-as-outerwear trend has been making rounds in the fashion world for some time now, but leave it to Rihanna, the queen of Savage x Fenty herself, to take it to a whole new level, perfect for fall.
Rihanna’s beauty look was equally on point. She rocked a chin-length, side-parted bob styled in slick, wet waves. Meanwhile, her makeup featured shimmery champagne eyeshadow, a smokey cat eye, and glossy brown lip liner.
When asked about her thoughts on the lingerie trend, Rihanna told People, “Lingerie, to me, should be worn any way and anywhere that you want. Whether you want it to be seen on display outside of T-shirts or inside a jacket falling off, or just to be cozy or just to have a little support, [it doesn’t matter].”
But don’t think for a second that the mom of two is always glammed up. When it comes to her day-to-day life, comfort is key. “Anything that’s cozy, anything that’s stretchy, anything that’s easy to bend down and pick my kids up in. Those are the things I look for,” she explained. “Things that don’t scratch me, don’t scratch them. We’ve got a lot of work to do in a day of a life of a mom.”
In fact, Rihanna admits that putting together an outfit these days that isn’t sweats or PJs feels like a major accomplishment. “If I can put on a little lingerie every now and then, if I can just feel like I did something—a little makeup, brush my hair—those are big accomplishments in my life these days,” Rih shared.
While Rihanna certainly isn’t the first to champion the lingerie-as-outerwear look, her influence on the trend means we’re always watching how she styles her next look.
